Talking
"You're not here because you want me, Jake; you're here because you're scared your dad will stop the money when he finds out we're not together." I'm not a fool.
"No, I have the money. He can't stop me from getting it, Ruby. This was me realising I saw you with Oliver, and I realised how much I love you."
Sitting, we talk, and no matter what he says, I know this is fear. Fear his dad will find out the truth and cut him off. Is he really going to sit here and make out like he loves me just to keep money?Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
I watch him come back from the toilet; his hand reaches down, and he picks something up. "When did you wear this, or even get it?" He holds up the leather one-piece.
"Jake, stop touching my things." He nods and places it down.
"I just hadn't seen it before, that's all. It's not exactly something you would normally wear."
"I wear different things; I agreed to come with you; that's as far as this goes."
"Are you really saying there is nothing I can do to sort this?"
"Jake, I need a drink." Standing, I walk down and grab a glass and bottle. Walking back up, he looks up at me from some papers. Shit.
Grabbing them, I put them in my drawer.
"That's why? You're what? Getting into some weird shit with a guy?"
"Jake, I said leave my shit alone."
"I just want the truth! I'm apologising, I'm begging, and you say no. Why? Because you're planning to fuck a random guy?" My mouth opens, and he continues. "If you had shown this side of you while we were together, things might have worked." "Might have? See Jake, I'm not the issue, you are. I've agreed to come, and I will. Now stop!"
"Sorry, I just don't want to lose you. So how about you consider it and decide when we're there? Don't rush to decide now, Ruby. Really consider it. You loved me. That must still be there somewhere."
This guy doesn't quit. "I will consider it, but it's highly unlikely I will get back with you, Jake. So be ready to tell your dad it's over." He nods and leans forward, my hand going up and stopping him. "So I can't even kiss you?"
"Jake, it's late. Good night. I will see you in the morning to drive down there." I watch him stand, his eyes on the drawer.
"Consider it, you're going to throw away love for a fling with a random guy?" Turning, he leaves, and my body falls backwards. I can't deal with him; God knows how I will stop myself from strangling him in the car tomorrow.
I've ensured I have headphones on the entire drive; the music is likely killing my hearing, but it means Jake doesn't speak to me. We go, he tells his dad, and then I walk.
The headphones are pulled from me.
"Jake!"
"Ruby, I'm trying to fix it."
"You apologising and getting on your knees isn't enough."
"Then what is? What if I buy you a new ring?" I laugh.
"I don't want your money, Jake; I never did!"
"Then what do you want? I'm trying everything."
"Can you go back, not sleep with anyone, and not use me to gain your father's money? Can you do that, Jake?"
"No, I'm sorry, so how about we start again? From the beginning?" I roll my eyes and watch as he stops the car. "Please, Ruby. I'm sorry." God, I can't deal with him.
"I'll consider it." He nods and gets out, well at least that has shut him up. Getting out, I look at the house. God, this is going to be bad.
