CATCH YOU
Kimberly had checked her phone screen more than ten times. Nicholas had promised to keep in touch since less than 24 hours ago. But look at it now. It was already 9 PM, and he hadn’t sent a single message, making her feel uneasy.
He promised to always keep in touch.
Look at it now.
He even broke his promise.
Kimberly let out a frustrated sigh. Her mood soured instantly.
Typical man.
They were all the same.
Liars!
Right after Kimberly finished cursing under her breath, her phone rang loudly. She quickly grabbed it and answered the call.
“Hello,” she said with irritation in her tone.
“Why are you only calling me now!” Kimberly asked in an annoyed tone. She was already upset because she had been waiting for news from him for a while.
Nicholas laughed on the other end of the line.
“Oh my God. I’m sorry, Kimberly. As soon as I arrived in the Maldives, Claudia and the other business associates took me straight to the construction site. It seems they couldn’t wait to inspect it.”
In silence, Kimberly chose not to respond. Even though Nicholas had explained, she couldn’t help feeling angry. She wondered why it was so difficult to send a short message just to give an update. Was she that unimportant to Nicholas that he forgot about her?
There was no response from the other side, prompting Nicholas to speak up again. “Are you angry with me? What can I do to make you forgive me?”
Kimberly took a deep breath. “Just think about it yourself!” she replied curtly.
“I’m sorry, Kimberly. I promise I won’t forget to update you again,” Nicholas pleaded. He seemed frustrated now.
“Hmmm, I forgive you this time. But if tomorrow you forget me again, there will be no forgiveness,” Kimberly threatened. She was serious about her words.
Kimberly talked with Nicholas for quite a while on the phone. They sounded like a couple deeply in love, exchanging jokes and laughter. Finally, Kimberly decided to end the call.
“You should rest. I’m sure your schedule for tomorrow is quite hectic,” Kimberly said. She was also aware of Nicholas’s agenda for the following day. Lack of rest could affect his stamina.
“Yeah, after this, I’ll rest immediately. You should rest too. Take care of yourself there,” Nicholas replied.
“Okay, but before that, I want to hear a goodnight wish from you,” Kimberly requested. Her voice was soft and tender, enough to melt anyone who heard it.
“Goodnight,” Nicholas said simply.
“Is that all?” Kimberly asked.
Nicholas blinked. “Do I need to say anything else?”
This time, Kimberly sighed in annoyance, seeing that Nicholas didn’t understand what she meant.
“You’re hopeless!” she scoffed. “Never mind then.”
But as Kimberly was about to hang up, Nicholas suddenly called her again.
“Kimmy…”
“What is it?” Kimberly asked.
“Goodnight, my beloved. I hope you dream of me tonight.”
Kimberly immediately smiled. Butterflies fluttered in her chest at the sweet words from the man she loved. Not wanting to miss the moment, she replied, “Goodnight, my future husband.”
Kimberly believed that Nicholas was probably smiling on the other end after hearing her words.
“I love you, Mrs. Alistair.”
“I love you more,” Kimberly replied. Then the call ended.
Shortly after, Kimberly jumped for joy. She felt so happy about what Nicholas had just done. It was simple, but it left a strong impression on her. However, her phone rang again not long after. Glancing briefly, she saw an unknown number calling. Hesitantly, she answered.
“Kimberly…”
A voice she recognized well called her name.
“What is it?” she asked, her tone flat.
“Meet me in the lobby of your apartment. There’s something important we need to talk about. I beg you. It’s very important.”
Before she could respond, the call was cut off. Feeling curious, she made her way to the lobby, scanning her surroundings until her eyes caught the figure she was looking for.
“Why are you looking for me tonight?” Kimberly asked as she took a seat on one of the lobby sofas.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
“Opa’s condition is deteriorating, Kimmy,” Mario, the man who had called her, provided the information. It was clear that he was speaking the truth.
“Opa’s heart is acting up again?”
Mario nodded. “If his condition continues to worsen in the next week, I’ll take him to Singapore. He’s been asking for you since yesterday.”
Kimberly closed her eyes, weighing Mario’s request. She was very certain that by choosing to go, it meant she might not see Nicholas again.
“I can’t go with you. Please understand my situation,” Kimberly pleaded.
“Is it Nicholas who’s preventing you from meeting your family?” Mario accused. His eyes suddenly turned sharp.
“It’s not that. It’s just that I’m not ready yet. Give me a little more time. I promise I’ll come home and see Opa soon,” Kimberly whispered, pleading.
Mario reached for Kimberly’s hand, holding it gently for a while.
“I hope you change your mind soon. Opa deserves it. Whenever you’re ready, I’ll come to pick you up.”
Kimberly nodded in agreement. Soon after, Mario left her sitting there, lost in thought.
Meanwhile, from a distance, someone had been observing and photographing every move Kimberly made.
