Marrying my high school bully

Twins

“We shouldn’t be brusque with our decision, everyone makes mistakes.” I pleaded on behalf of Leonardo, whose face was filled with beads of sweat cascading down his pale cheeks.

The board members of Hills Jewelry had called for an impromptu meeting with just one aim, and that was to bring Leonardo down.

Troy Golds was dealing with us decisively and if Leonardo didn’t evacuate his position as CEO, we’d be facing a heavy lawsuit that we might not be able to evade.

Once again, everything was going my way and it was really fun, having Leonardo plead with me to defend him when I was the one plotting his downfall.

“Don’t say that, Miss Rogers. This man here is a scallywag who knows nothing else aside from spending the company’s funds ridiculously, at the expense of the stability of someone’s legacy. Is that the person we need to be lenient with?” Mr Han thundered.

If he wasn’t working for me, I’d think that he was mad at me so I kept shut, silently proving to Leonardo that I’d played my part.Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.

“Look, I know that we have a beef, but that doesn’t mean you should defame my name in such a manner, Han. I’m not that heartless. ” He argued.

Another member shot up to his feet, “You think you aren’t heartless?” He asked with a hint of sarcasm. “You’re the most cruel person I know for withholding staff salary in exchange for living a lavish life. Do you even care about the welfare of the people working under you?”

Leonardo inclined his head, his lips sealed as he realized that his secret was out in the open. If he was sensible enough, he’d apologize and convince everyone that he’d do better, but that was why he was who he was.

He didn’t know how to apologize, so the only thing I knew would be going on in his head would be how to murder anyone who opposed him.

“As Miss Rogers said earlier, everyone makes errors and I’m no exception. And I’m sure the staff members are making things up because I approve salaries each month.” He said nonchalantly and I almost scoffed.

“The salaries that go to your pocket?” Mr Han asked and he shot him a murderous glare.

When he lifted his head, his scowl reminded me of how evil he could be whenever he was denied what he wanted. His brows arched against each other and his eyes darkened.

“I swear to God if you don’t stop talking…” He growled through his clenched teeth.

“Don’t you dare threaten me!” Mr Han fired.

The next thing that happened was like in a movie as Leonardo climbed over the table instantly, his fist landing on Mr Han’s jaw unexpectedly.

The sound of a bone crack was heard, as he slipped off his seat and fell on the floor. I scrambled away from my seat to avoid getting hit, while the security buzzed in, dragging Leonardo, who kept kicking and throwing punches in the air out of the room.

I quickly rushed to Mr Han and checked his face. Blood gushed out from the crack slowly, the boardroom becoming rowdy.

“Get the ambulance!” I yelled as I took off my jacket and dabbed his jaw with it in a bid to keep the blood from pouring out further.

The sight reminded me of my kidnap, and fresh anger was aroused within me. Leonardo had to be locked up in jail as soon as possible.

Since we had no paramedic around, we had to wait until we heard the siren of the ambulance. The door flung open and they rolled in a stretcher, placed Mr Han on it and wheeled him out.

My jacket was beyond smeared with blood, and my heart palpitated in fear while I prayed that he wouldn’t lose more blood than that.

Without any announcement, we already knew that the meeting was over and everyone had to return home, but how could I attend my doctor’s appointment in a lace camisole?

I sighed in confusion as I picked up my phone that was ringing, and my lips spread in a smile when I saw that Dexter was the caller.

“You missed the meeting,” I whined.

“I’m so sorry, Melissa. I’ve been busy with work, but I promise to be there on the day of the election to throw my support.” He promised and I rolled my eyes.

I quickly narrated Mr Han’s ordeal to him and asked him to come over.

“My God, Melissa! Did that maniac hit you as well?” The concern laced with barely suppressed anger caught me unaware.

“He didn’t do anything to me. I wasn’t the one who opposed him verbally. I just want you to come with me for our first ultrasound.” I informed him and paused, knowing that it wasn’t the right time to give him such information. “I’m really sorry for telling you this now.”

He let out a breath. “This sounds like an afterthought, but I’ll clear my desk and pick you up.”

*********

I laid on the bed stiffly, as my camisole rode up to my midriff. The sonographer massaged my stomach with a gel, with Dexter holding my hand tenderly.

His eyes shone with care, but I could see the glints of annoyance behind them. It was my fault anyway, I should have told him beforehand about the ultrasound.

“You requested to confirm how far along you are, and after this, you’ll be given a comprehensive result. The ultrasound will also help you know how the baby is faring. Alright?” The sonographer said carefully and I nodded.

She placed the transducer on my belly and I writhed in slight discomfort. Dexter patted my shoulder, then brought his face forward and kissed my forehead.

“Don’t be scared. I’m here with you.”

“Thank you,” I squeaked.

After his kiss, I became ready for the ultrasound so I nudged the sonographer to continue. She rotated the transducer around my stomach and signaled that we stared at the video monitor.

My eyes watered when I saw the monochrome frame of my womb. A pea-sized object became visible and I squeezed Dexter’s hand tightly, unable to hold back a sob.

“That’s our baby!” I pointed at the monitor gleefully.

“Yes, it is.” He kissed my forehead again, this time with more affection and longing.

It felt like seeing our baby had helped to clear the little barrier that obstructed our friendship.

“Wow!” The sonographer gasped, her eyes fixed on the screen with a crease on her forehead. She stopped rotating the transducer for a second, then continued while I glanced at Dexter with slight panic.

“What’s wrong?” The fear in my voice couldn’t be mistaken.

She gasped, her lips spreading with a bright smile as she darted her gaze from me to Dexter. “Nothing is wrong, ma’am. I think you should take a closer look at the monitor.” She urged me on.

“Aren’t you going to spill it?” I cried almost desperately.

“You’ll be glad at the end of the day-”

She couldn’t even complete her statement as Dexter released my hand and palmed his face. “Oh my God!” He screamed, “Is it what I think it is?”

I couldn’t bear the suspense anymore, so I stared at the monitor intensely, and then I saw it. Two pea-sized objects-babies, lying comfortably in my womb.

My lips parted and a scream broke out. “We are having twins!” I exclaimed.

“Yes, Honey. We are.” He hugged me, raking his fingers through my hair while I let the tears down my cheeks.

I couldn’t believe that this was happening.

Twins.

Two little humans were growing in my stomach.

Even after the painful ordeal that made me give up on childbearing, I wasn’t just compensated with a child but with both of them.

“Congratulations, ma’am, sir. As you have both seen, you are having twins. Please don’t ignore your doctor’s appointment. It’s very important that you attend for your safety and that of your babies. Congratulations once again, I’ll get you the sonogram before you leave.” She said and the door slammed shut.

My mouth was heavy, hence, I couldn’t affirm that I heard everything she said. But with these precious gifts inside of me, I wouldn’t dream of missing the doctor’s appointment, or even joke with my health.

I broke off the hug and palmed Dexter’s cheeks, our gazes locked on each other and together we chorused, “Thank you.”
