Chapter 75 You Want to Sit On My Lap?
After dark, Louis drove back to the company's retreat.
First, he returned to his room to drop off his belongings. As he emerged, he glanced deliberately at Blanche's door. It was firmly shut. He unfastened the diamond cufflink at his wrist, rolling his sleeve up slightly as he squinted before turning to descend the staircase.
Outside the hotel, Eric, with his long legs casually stretched out, was sitting on a chair and conversing on the phone. Upon noticing Louis's towering figure approaching, he promptly ended the call.
"Brother, weren't you supposed to stay out tonight?" Eric asked, "There's the city-wide Enterprise Association organized tomorrow. It's a two-hour trip back and forth. Wouldn't it be more convenient to stay there?"
"You'll attend tomorrow's meeting," Louis, standing under a verdant banana tree, cast a sidelong glance at the night sky.
"What, me? Aren't those your tasks?" Eric found those meetings drowsy and wasn't keen on attending.
"You can choose between Africa or tomorrow's meeting."
"Oh, are you threatening me?"
Louis hummed noncommittally without responding. Noticing Louis's deadly gaze, Eric cowered. "Fine, I'll go. It's just a meeting."
"What are you looking at? Searching for someone?" Eric noticed Louis's cold yet searching gaze after a while. Each sweep seemed to cover an entire area, much like an X-ray scan.
"Where is Blanche?"
Her room was dark from the outside. It was only eight in the evening, so it was improbable for her to be asleep. He hadn't spotted her anywhere nearby either.
Upon hearing this, Eric was filled with interest. This millennially frozen heart was thawing bit by bit.
"So, you're looking for Blanche," Eric teased, "Some people deny their feelings, but in reality, Blanche has already occupied a prominent position in their hearts..."
"Ahem, Blanche went for a walk to enjoy the night view here. Wait a bit, and she will definitely be back soon."
Every time Eric began to speak at length, he felt his brother's chilly gaze. It was frightening.
"She is unfamiliar with the area, and she went out for a night stroll alone?"
"I'm not sure if she was alone. You can ask her when she returns. I have a meeting early tomorrow, so I will head up to rest." Eric intentionally left on a cliffhanger before disappearing.
Louis took a seat on the chair, crossing his legs. The night was getting darker and the waiting longer.
During this time, he received two international calls. After ending them, he checked the time. His expression remained impassive. It was already half past eleven, and Blanche had yet to return.
He tapped his knee thoughtfully. Had this woman run into danger during her night walk? Preparing to call Blanche, he pulled out her number.NôvelDrama.Org content.
"Mr. Herbart, you're still awake?" Brendon passed by, his eyes falling on Louis, seated on the bench.
Dressed in casual clothes, Brendon looked refreshed.
Louis lifted his gaze. The hand that was about to dial Blanche's number halted. He merely nodded slightly in response.
"I'll head inside first," Brendon said, "I've been out with friends and am soaked in sweat. I'll go clean up in my room."
Brendon departed quickly, in high spirits.
Louis's mouth twitched. Had Brendon also been out for a stroll? Louis had found Brendon disagreeable since the afternoon and had asked Sam to find a way to keep him away from Blanche before he left.
As expected, after a short while, the sound of light footsteps echoed from the entrance. Blanche had returned.
Blanche, dressed in white casual shoes, entered through the door. Her jade-like legs glowed under the lights. She was also carrying a bag, the contents of which were unknown.
Seeing Blanche's beaming face adorned with a pretty little white flower, Louis felt a sense of irony.
Blanche headed straight for the hotel entrance without noticing Louis not far away.
Louis thinned his lips and coldly asked, "Where have you been?"
This unexpected utterance gave Jiang Ruoyue a start. In the quiet of the deep night, a sudden icy voice echoed in her ears, just like a night phantom. Blanche's slender legs quivered in fright.
Blanche turned towards the sound, spotting Louis seated arrogantly in the distance.
"Why haven't you gone to sleep? I took a walk around," she answered.
Louis questioned her with a stern expression. His gaze, however, was fixated on Blanche's fair legs.
He must be bewitched, he thought. In his position, he had encountered numerous beautiful women, but he had never felt the urge to look at them more than once. Only Blanche, at this moment, held his gaze captive. This woman truly had a magnetic pull.
"I walked around the vicinity to enjoy the night scenery here. Is there a problem?" Blanche's heart fluttered slightly. She had merely gone out for a stroll, so why was he interrogating her with such dissatisfaction? Had she upset him?
A trace of mockery appeared at the corner of Louis's mouth. "Did you go alone? Are you familiar with the surroundings? Aren't you afraid of being kidnapped and sold off in the middle of the night?"
"Not alone. I was with someone. But when you speak to me, please be a little more courteous. On what grounds are you questioning me? We don't have a superior-subordinate relationship."
Blanche started to feel aggrieved. He was acting as if she were his subordinate.
Why couldn't this man show a bit of gratitude? At least she had saved him once, yet he couldn't even be a little kinder to her. He was too cold-hearted.
Not alone? How interesting.
Louis's gaze, sharp as a sword, seemed to pierce through Blanche's slender figure.
Blanche felt inexplicably flustered. Throughout their interactions, she found this man to possess a devastatingly intimidating aura. Whenever he fixed her with such a gaze, it would send chills down
her spine.
Blanche wanted to leave this magnetic field that Louis had control over, but her feet felt like they were glued to the ground, unable to take a step forward.
A mosquito buzzed past, biting Blanche's white leg before flying away. Blanche felt an itch and scratched it, providing her with an excuse.
"There are mosquitoes here, so I'm going back to my room."
That was a good excuse. Blanche took a step forward.
"Do you think I'm dead? If you have the guts, leave. But don't regret it afterward."
Out in the middle of the night with another man, without a sense of shame, and yet she was lecturing him on how to speak. This woman was constantly testing his patience.
Blanche, who was about to step forward, froze her brow twitching. "What do you mean? Regret what?"
"The housekeeper told me that you pulled some of the most elite bodyguards from the villa to guard your grandmother at the hospital. With just one call from me, I can have them roll back to the villa."
An outright threat. Blanche gritted her teeth, thinking that he was despicable. But she absolutely couldn't let those bodyguards leave the hospital. She would let him threaten her today, and tomorrow she would hire guards from a security company to protect her grandmother. In this way, he could not threaten her again.
As expected, Blanche stopped in her tracks.
"Are you not tired of standing? Come sit."
Blanche glanced at the only long bench. "Not tired. The bench is not very spacious. It'll be a bit crowded for two people. What else do you want to say?"
Louis's eyebrows lifted. "So you're saying you don't want to sit on the bench, but you want to sit on my lap?"
